De Jong: We Need to Be More Balanced Between Defense and Attack
Thursday 06-11-2025
Dutch star Frenkie de Jong, midfielder for Barcelona and one of the team's leaders, expressed his dissatisfaction after his team's 3-3 draw against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League, confirming that the team should have won but did not perform at the required level to achieve that.

De Jong stated in his remarks after the match: "I think it was a match we should have won, but it is clear that we need to perform much better."

He added, clarifying the reasons for the decline in performance: "There are things we need to improve, and we know that and are working on it, but we don’t always show it on the pitch, and that is somewhat of a problem."

The Dutchman continued, criticizing the team's performance in defensive aspects: "We are a bit weak in counter-attacks, due to issues with marking and pressing up front, and our positioning at the back; it’s a combination of several factors."

When asked about the comparison between Barcelona's current performance and what they delivered last season, De Jong clearly stated: "We need to leave what happened last season behind us; also, last year we were not the best team in Europe, so we cannot rely on that. We need to improve, as we did not win the Champions League, and we also conceded a lot of goals last season, so we must get better."

De Jong concluded his remarks by emphasizing the difficulty of winning while conceding goals and praising the performance of his young teammate Lamine Yamal, saying: "It’s not just about not conceding goals, but when you concede three goals, it becomes very difficult to win. Yamal was good; he is a very special player and always makes a difference. He may have better games than others, but as long as he keeps working, there’s no need to worry about his level."
