UEFA's Decision on the Barcelona vs. Villarreal Match in Miami
The executive committee of the UEFA will determine the fate of the match between Villarreal and Barcelona in the 17th round of La Liga, to be held in Miami, USA, on December 20, 2025, during its meeting on Thursday, September 11, in Tirana, Albania, based on an official request from the Spanish Football Federation.
This request, which came with the approval of both clubs and La Liga, is a precedent in the history of the competition, as it will be the first official La Liga match to be held outside Spain.
In contrast, the Italian League has also submitted a request to move the match between Milan and Como to Australia, taking advantage of the San Siro stadium being occupied during the Winter Olympic Games, with no objections from Italian clubs, unlike the significant opposition within Spain, particularly from Real Madrid, the Professional Footballers' Association, and the European Football Supporters' Organization.
For his part, Glenn Micallef, the European Commissioner for Sports, stated that European football should be played in Europe, to which La Liga president Javier Tebas responded that the Villarreal vs. Barcelona match is just one of 380 matches in the season.
If UEFA approves, the final decision will rest with FIFA, with the possibility of organizing this type of matches in the future under clear rules that define the number of matches, distances, and the clubs allowed to participate.
In the same meeting, the host cities for the men's and women's UEFA Champions League finals in 2027 will be announced, with Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid being the favorite to host the men's final.
Meanwhile, the competition for the women's final is limited to the National Stadium in Warsaw and St. Jakob-Park in Basel, after Spotify Camp Nou was excluded from the final list.
