In a major surprise, Wydad Athletic Club finalized the deal for the return of its former star Zahir Al-Matarji just a few hours before the summer transfer window closed, with the player signing a new contract that extends for two seasons, providing the red team with an offensive boost through local and continental experience.

Al-Matarji, who is 29 years old, recently ended his association with the Egyptian club Pharco after a short stint that did not meet expectations, making him free to negotiate, which facilitated Wydad's management in completing the deal quickly, given their strong desire to regain his services.

Zahir Al-Matarji is considered one of the products of Wydad's academy, having defended the team's colors between 2017 and 2023, contributing to the club's collection of four professional league titles and a CAF Champions League title, while also stealing the spotlight with decisive goals in crucial matches.

However, his two stints abroad, first in Bahrain with Al-Khalidiya and then in Egypt with Pharco, did not meet expectations, which reflected on his market value, which dropped to about 250,000 euros, after being one of the prominent stars in the Moroccan league.

Al-Matarji's return to the red fortress comes at a sensitive time, as Wydad seeks to regain its luster both locally and continentally after a tumultuous season that saw repeated changes in the coaching staff.
