Deco: If the right conditions are met.. We will try to sign Nico Williams
Deco, the sporting director of Barcelona, confirmed that the Catalan club will try to sign Spanish winger Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao during the summer transfer window, if the right conditions are met to complete the deal.
Deco said: "We want to sign Nico Williams, and if the right conditions are met, we will try to finalize the deal. The player shows a clear desire to come, like other players who have ambition and hunger for success."
The sporting director of Barcelona clarified the steps to sign any player by stating: "To finalize any deal, we must first talk to his agent, then discuss the details of the contract, and after that, we know the position of his club. In Nico's case, it is clear; he has a release clause."
He continued: "We met with his agent to understand the player's desire, and from there we will see if it is possible to sign him."
Regarding the relationship between Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, Deco added: "It is good that they are friends, but this is not a friends' club; we are here to work and achieve victories, and if they get along off the pitch, that’s even better."
Regarding the team's priorities in the transfer market, Deco said: "We need to strengthen the winger position; we only have Lamine and Raphinha, while Ferran Torres is gradually turning into a striker. When Lamine or Raphinha is absent, the team's level drops. The available options depend on price and quality."
About the club's signing of goalkeeper Juan Garcia, he said: "The deal was made for the present and the future; there aren’t many young goalkeepers at this level, and we had to make the decision before he left for another club or his cost increased further."
He explained: "We did not speak directly with Juan Garcia before the end of the league; we only communicated with his agent and made it clear that we wanted to sign him if he opened the door for a move to Barcelona."
Deco confirmed that the decision on who guards the goal will remain in the hands of coach Hans Flick: "I am responsible for forming the team, but the decision is in the hands of the coach. There is no contract that obliges participation; all players start from scratch, whether it's Ter Stegen or Juan Garcia. We have high expectations of Juan, but the decision is in the hands of the coach."
He also emphasized his respect for Ter Stegen, saying: "I have great respect for Marc, but we had to make the decision for the future of the club. Whether Juan plays tomorrow or in a year, that will be decided by the coach."
Deco also confirmed the renewal of Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny's contract, saying: "Yes, Szczesny renewed his contract; we have four goalkeepers, including Iñaki Peña, and we will make the appropriate decisions at the right time."
When asked about the possibility of defender Ronald Araújo leaving, Deco answered clearly: "We want to improve the team, not weaken it. If an important player leaves, we weaken the team. Ronald renewed his contract, had a difficult season, and faced unfair criticism. He is one of the best defenders in the world, and his departure is not an option."
In conclusion, Deco clarified that signing a top-class winger would be the last big deal this summer: "If we finalize the winger deal, we will not make any other signings at the same level."
