Controversial celebration in Monaco: Coulibaly mimics Brunner's banned gesture
Mamadou Coulibaly, a player for AS Monaco, has sparked controversy after celebrating his team's goal against Le Havre today, Sunday, in the 10th round of Ligue 1, by mimicking a neck-slitting gesture. This incident is similar to what his teammate Paris Brunner did last September, which resulted in a suspension.
The incident occurred in the 40th minute when Coulibaly, aged 22, took advantage of a glaring mistake from Le Havre defender Harold Voyer, who returned the ball too strongly to his goalkeeper Nicolas Kocik. The latter failed to control it, leaving the AS Monaco player with an easy opportunity to slot the ball into the net, marking his first goal in Ligue 1 this season.
Mamadou Coulibaly celebrated his goal in front of Raya's corner by sliding on his knees and sticking out his tongue, before placing his thumb under his neck in a gesture mimicking a beheading. This act could place him under the scrutiny of the disciplinary committee of Ligue 1.
This incident recalls the punishment that his teammate Paris Brunner received after performing the same gesture towards the Strasbourg fans on September 12, which led the disciplinary committee to suspend him for four matches, two of which are currently active. This puts Coulibaly at risk of a similar penalty, pending the committee's decision on the matter.
