Manchester United are set to sign Jean-Philippe Mateta, a forward from Crystal Palace, in the upcoming January transfer window after the possibility of acquiring Dominic Calvert-Lewin faltered, with the French player agreeing to move to Old Trafford.

TEAMtalk has reported that Manchester United are searching for a striker with significant experience in the Premier League, especially after it was confirmed that Benjamin Sesko will be out until the new year due to a leg bone injury, alongside the club's lack of conviction in Joshua Zirkzee's abilities.

The Athletic had reported the club's interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but the BBC has stated that the Leeds United striker is preparing to sign a new contract with his club.

Mateta emerges as a potential replacement, having scored 42 goals in the Premier League over the past three seasons, amid interest from Manchester United. According to talkSPORT, the 29-year-old player is open to a move to Old Trafford.

The French striker's contract with Crystal Palace expires at the end of the current season, and he does not intend to renew it, making January the last opportunity for his club to receive a financial return for his departure.

However, Manchester United will face competition from Tottenham, who are also interested in signing Mateta, and a move to them may represent a more attractive option for the player at this time.
