Bernardo Silva proves Mourinho's gamble right
Portuguese manager José Mourinho, in charge of Real Madrid, surprised everyone during his return to Camp Nou by relying on his compatriot Bernardo Silva in the match against Barcelona. The midfielder delivered an impressive performance, demonstrating his ability to control the tempo of the game and impose a style that suits the royal team.
José Mourinho was convinced from the start that Bernardo Silva would play an important role throughout the season, despite the criticism and questions surrounding his limited appearances in the early period. The manager preferred to give the player enough time to regain his physical fitness before assigning him the task of organizing play and leading the midfield.
According to Spanish newspaper 'AS', Real Madrid officials see Bernardo Silva as the right choice to provide the team with balance and the ability to manage matches, especially after Rodri was ruled out of the club's plans. Despite some doubts about the Portuguese player's ability to handle this responsibility, his appearance against Barcelona was the first major test in which he succeeded.
The start of the deal dates back to last June, when Mourinho informed José Ángel Sánchez and Juni Calafat, during a visit to Madrid, of the need to sign the player, saying: "We need a player like Bernardo Silva, we must succeed in bringing him in." Once the player learned of Real Madrid's interest, he halted other negotiations that were open to him.
Bernardo Silva has been looking forward to wearing the Real Madrid shirt since confirming his departure from Manchester City, although the royal club initially saw no need to complete the transfer. After the first rejection, his agent Jorge Mendes began searching for a new destination for the player, who has previously won various titles with Manchester City, before his opportunity with the Spanish team was renewed.
The player ultimately rejected other options, including a move to Atlético Madrid and Barcelona, preferring to fulfill his dream of playing for Real Madrid. Financial factors were not the primary motivation behind his decision; rather, it was linked to his personal ambition and desire to wear the white shirt, especially with José Mourinho returning to the club's radar.
Despite the risks involved in his decision, Bernardo Silva feels that the wait was worth it. The player knows that Real Madrid are expected to compete for titles, a challenge he has been accustomed to throughout his career, and the pressure does not concern him.
Bernardo Silva has a season and a half to prove that Mourinho's insistence on signing him was justified, having taken his first important steps with the team during the match against Barcelona. However, the player knows that what he showcased in the clásico is just the beginning, and he aims to continue developing and contributing to achieving more titles and successes with Real Madrid.
