Manchester City threatened with relegation to the Championship
Manchester City faces the prospect of severe sporting penalties over its financial rules violations in the Premier League, amid reports suggesting a significant points deduction that could lead to its relegation to the Championship.
According to a report published by journalist Oliver Holt, the potential punishment could include a massive points deduction that ensures Manchester City's relegation, along with a substantial financial fine, while the final extent of the penalties remains undecided for now.
The report added that the club may face an additional points deduction, which could lead to it remaining in the Championship for another season instead of quickly returning to the Premier League if this option is adopted as part of the final sanctions.
However, so far, there has been no official announcement regarding the final sanctions against Manchester City. An independent committee had concluded that serious financial violations had occurred, before the club filed an appeal on October 2, 2026, meaning that the case remains open and the details of the punishment and its timing have not been officially determined.
An independent committee in the Premier League has found Manchester City guilty of 114 out of 115 charges related to financial rule breaches.
