Foden: This was eating me up inside
Phil Foden, Manchester City's midfielder, expressed his great relief after ending his goal drought during the 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
Phil Foden opened the scoring for Manchester City, converting a cross from his teammate Jérémy Doku into the net, in a goal that held special significance for the English player, who celebrated by kissing the club's badge in front of the fans in the south stand.
Phil Foden's last goal was in December against Crystal Palace, and he returned to face Ipswich after missing Manchester City's previous three Premier League matches due to suspension.
Phil Foden said in statements to the "Match of the Day" program after the match: "I should have scored a while ago, as I have wasted many big chances this season. It was eating away at me inside, so I am happy to score today, but the most important thing is to get the three points and put ourselves in a good position in the table. It's a very important win."
The player praised the impact of coach Enzo Maresca since taking charge, after the latter predicted before the match that Phil Foden would score against Ipswich, which indeed happened.
"Mariska has adapted very well, and the players are responding to the ideas she wants to implement. We still have a lot to improve, and today's match is an example of that, as we can deliver a much better performance. We hope to continue developing and become stronger."
He added: "We have to give Ipswich a lot of respect, they put on a great match, were good in possession, played with intensity, and made things difficult for us. Matches won't always be pretty; it's about getting the desired result, and we managed that today, and I am very happy."
Phil Foden praised the support of Manchester City fans, saying: "You can feel that the fans are behind us and pushing us forward. It's great to play at home, as you can hear how loud they are, giving us that extra boost we need."
