Billy Sharp, the all-time top scorer in the EFL Championship, announces his retirement from football

English striker Billy Sharp has announced his retirement from football, ending a successful career in English football after scoring 130 goals in the Championship, making him the all-time top scorer in the competition.

Billy Sharp has been particularly associated with Sheffield United, where he played 377 matches across three different spells, scoring 129 goals. He also contributed to the team's promotion to the Championship in the 2016-2017 season, before helping them reach the Premier League in the 2018-2019 and 2022-2023 seasons.

Billy Sharp contributed to Doncaster Rovers' promotion to the EFL League One for the 2024-2025 season, after scoring nine goals in the league during the season in which the team won the EFL League Two title, continuing his impactful presence in English football competitions.

Billy Sharp expressed his satisfaction with what he has achieved throughout his career, saying: "It was great to score my 300th goal, but I have had an incredible journey. I love football and I am very passionate about it. I may not have been the most talented player, and I may not have been the most popular on the pitch, but that comes from my love for football and my passion for it, and I believe I have extracted everything I can from my career."
