Manchester United face four decisions on player contracts before the end of the season
Manchester United face four important contractual matters before the end of the 2026-2027 season, as the contracts of Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martínez, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw are nearing their end.
Manchester United have the option to extend Bruno Fernandes' contract for an additional year, while the club's management has already begun discussions regarding a new deal for the Portuguese player, who is still regarded as one of the team's most important elements, despite his shaky start to the current season. Fernandes broke the record for the most assists in the Premier League last season.
Manchester United also have the option to extend Martínez's contract by 12 months. The Argentine defender returned late to pre-season after participating in the World Cup, which saw him on the bench for the opening match against Hull, but he started in the team's next five matches in the Premier League.
Harry Maguire signed a new one-year contract in April, which includes an option for an additional year. This gives the club flexibility in managing the future of the defensive duo Maguire and Martínez, who Michael Carrick has continued to rely on as his first-choice centre-backs this season.
Luke Shaw's situation differs from the trio, as his current contract does not include an option for an additional year, meaning Manchester United will need to negotiate a new deal if they wish to keep him. Shaw is currently the longest-serving player in the team, having completed 12 years since his transfer from Southampton in June 2014 for £30 million. Despite missing three matches this season due to a minor physical issue, he started the recent match against Fulham before the international break, at a time when the club intends to prioritize strengthening the left-back position during the upcoming summer.
