Borussia Mönchengladbach have announced today, Sunday, their separation from coach Eugène Polanski, following the disastrous start of the team in the Bundesliga season 2026-2027.

The decision to sack the coach came just one day after a heavy 0-5 defeat to Freiburg, which raised the team's tally to three losses in the first three rounds, without any points, having scored three goals and conceded 12.

Sporting director Rufin Schröder said: "Despite good preparations for the season and some positive aspects, the team has not been able to achieve the results we desired in the Bundesliga. The performance shown recently led us to make the decision to relieve Eugen of his duties with immediate effect."

Polanski, who is 40 years old, has concluded his nearly year-long period at the helm of the first team, having taken on the role temporarily in September 2025 before being appointed as the permanent head coach. The club has also decided to relieve assistant coach Tobias Trollsen of his duties.

Assistant coach Jan Moritz Lichte will temporarily lead the team, assisted by Markus Gellhaus, until a new manager is appointed. Lichte previously worked as head coach with Mainz during Schröder's tenure at the club.

Polanski said after his departure: "Borussia Mönchengladbach was and will remain my club, and that is why what happened pains me greatly. After securing survival last season, we made several changes and had big ambitions for this season, but we were unable to achieve them. I am sorry for that, and I hope the team can get back on the right track quickly."
