Lionel Messi posted a message on his Instagram account, stating at the beginning: "After all this time since the final match, and after long consideration, I want to inform you all that I am retiring from playing with the national team."
Argentina captain Lionel Messi stated: "It was a painful decision and it still hurts me deeply inside, but I understand that this is the right moment."
He confirmed: "I wrote these words on July 21, two days after the final, today and after what happened with my father, I am more convinced of this decision than I was before."
Argentina's captain stated that he has given everything for the national team and to please the fans, noting that he has nothing more to offer, with young players deserving their chance with the team.
Lionel Messi thanked the fans for their love and support over 20 years. He also expressed his gratitude to his family, coaches, teammates, and officials who accompanied him throughout this journey, confirming that he will continue to support the national team from abroad.
