Argentinian star Lionel Messi is set to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Buenos Aires, in a tribute considered the highest of its kind at the Argentine university, in recognition of his sporting career and significant impact in representing his country.

The University of Buenos Aires has announced that its governing council has unanimously approved the award for Lionel Messi, noting that the career of the Argentine captain represents "an example of excellence, perseverance, humility, and ethical behavior."

Lionel Messi is set to receive an award on Tuesday, October 6, before his farewell match with the Argentina national team against Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, marking his final appearance in his country's shirt.

Ricardo Gilbi stated that Messi represents "an example and ambassador of our popular culture and national identity", referring to the status the player holds within Argentina after a career filled with achievements.

Lionel Messi has led Argentina to victory in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, and has also won the Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, along with an Olympic gold medal in 2008. He also holds several records with the national team, being the all-time top scorer with 125 goals, the player with the most assists at 68, and the most capped player with 207 appearances.
