Gakpo Chooses Manchester City, Pushes for Transfer
Dutch forward Cody Gakpo of Liverpool has made his intentions clear regarding his future, expressing a desire to move to Manchester City during the current transfer window. Negotiations between the involved parties have already begun in hopes of reaching a final agreement.
According to The Athletic, 27-year-old Gakpo has turned down the idea of moving to Tottenham Hotspur, preferring to embark on a new experience with Manchester City and play at the Etihad Stadium.
On the other hand, Liverpool does not oppose Gakpo's departure, but they require signing a replacement first before agreeing to finalize the deal. This condition ties the negotiations between the clubs to the Reds' ability to secure the right alternative.
The Dutch striker had an impressive season with Liverpool during the 2024-2025 campaign, participating in 49 matches, scoring 18 goals, and providing 7 assists, helping the team clinch the Premier League title.
Cody Gakpo has renewed his commitment to Liverpool, signing a new contract in August 2025 that extends his stay at the club for five years.
Liverpool had secured the player's transfer in December 2022 from PSV, for a base fee of £37 million, with the potential for the total deal to rise to £44 million depending on add-ons and incentives.
During his time with Liverpool, Gakpo has played 180 matches for the club, scoring 50 goals and providing 23 assists, after starting his career in the PSV Eindhoven academy.
Current developments indicate that the player's desire has become clear, as negotiations continue between the concerned clubs to reach a final agreement that could pave the way for Gakpo's transfer to Manchester City.
