Guardiola feels guilty as Manchester City conviction haunts him and threatens his legacy
There has never been any doubt about Pep Guardiola's greatness as a coach; he is considered by many to be one of the best managers in history, perhaps the best of all time. However, the Spanish manager's reaction after the Premier League announced Manchester City's conviction on 114 out of 115 charges related to financial fair play violations is striking and deserves attention.
Those who reach the level of Guardiola do not easily accept that their work is subjected to any distortion, even when it comes to an investigation confirming repeated violations of financial rules by the club he led until last summer.
Only a few hours passed since the statements from the Premier League and Manchester City, when Guardiola took to his social media accounts to join the club's officials and former presidents in an attempt to prove the innocence of the team he has personally led to glory over the past ten years.
It has been announced that Pep Guardiola will return to the Etihad Stadium on the 14th of this month to attend Manchester City's match against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League, with the aim of "supporting" and "standing by the players of his former team" during this difficult moment.
Also noteworthy is the effort Guardiola is making to clarify his position regarding a case that personally affects him, despite the fact that he was present for only two seasons of the campaigns that were deemed irregular, namely the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons.
Meanwhile, there were other coaches who took charge of Manchester City during the same period, such as Mark Hughes, Roberto Mancini, and Manuel Pellegrini, alongside Brian Kidd who took on the role temporarily. All of them benefited, like Guardiola, from the funds coming from Abu Dhabi, which allowed the club, according to the analysis, to have teams that are supposed to be better than usual.
However, Guardiola seems different from them. Recent years confirm this, as he renewed his contract with Manchester City in 2024, at a time when it seemed his era at the club was nearing its end, before leaving in 2026, despite having one year remaining on his contract.
This gives the impression that he was extending and shortening deadlines according to the course of the investigation and the case, with the investigation continuing and then reaching a verdict. This file had troubled him before, and it seems to still trouble him now.
In the end, it seems that Pep Guardiola feels guilty, even without knowing whether he is actually guilty or not.
