Real Madrid Renew Interest in Signing Kees Smit
Dutch midfielder Kees Smit, playing for Alkmaar, continues to attract the attention of top European clubs, having established himself as one of the standout rising talents in Dutch football in recent years.
Smit's name has shone brightly since AZ Alkmaar clinched the UEFA Youth League title in 2023, after playing a pivotal role in the team's journey that saw them eliminate Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, before continuing on to lift the trophy.
Atletico Madrid had attempted to sign Smit during the last winter transfer window, but AZ Alkmaar's management refused to part ways with the player, allowing him to continue his development and become a key figure in the Dutch side.
Simeone is currently seeking a new step in his career, working with Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes, amid increasing interest from Premier League clubs. However, the player prefers to experience a challenge in La Liga.
According to reports, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona have all shown interest in the player, but Barcelona is currently focusing more on the Rodri deal. Atletico Madrid has signed midfielder Morten Hjulmand, while Real Madrid considers the player among a group of midfielders on their radar.
The 20-year-old Dutch player possesses the ability to play with both feet, along with his skill in breaking lines and playing in various positions in midfield. These traits make him closely aligned with the type of player José Mourinho prefers, who seeks to have players capable of moving across different midfield roles.
Despite the interest from major clubs, Smit does not rule out staying with AZ Alkmaar for an additional season to continue his development and gain more playing time and responsibilities. There is also the possibility of agreeing on a transfer in the summer of 2027.
The potential transfer is valued at approximately €60 million, a figure that reflects the player's standing in the European talent market.
