Barcelona Set to Receive Major Financial Windfall from World Cup
Barcelona is expecting to receive €2,893,533 from FIFA for the participation of its players in the 2026 World Cup, after 16 players from the club took part in the tournament, including eight who reached the final with the Spain national team, according to "Mundo Deportivo."
The report indicated that the compensation amount was lower than that received by Barcelona during the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which totaled €4,433,651. This is despite an increase in the overall amount allocated by FIFA to clubs, due to a change in the distribution mechanism after the number of participating teams was raised from 32 to 48, dividing the compensation between the qualifying rounds and the final tournament.
According to "Mundo Deportivo", Barcelona will receive €153,375 for the call-up of its players for the qualifying matches, while compensation for the final stage is calculated with a daily bonus of €4,330 for each player throughout their time with their national team, a figure that is lower than the daily bonus established for the 2022 World Cup.
The biggest payouts will go to players who were registered with Barcelona for the past two seasons of the tournament, as Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal will each grant the club €225,160 according to the compensation criteria established by FIFA.
The newspaper explained that some cases underwent different calculations due to player transfers between clubs, such as Juan Garcia, from which Barcelona will receive around €150,000, while Espanyol will get about €75,000. The compensation values for Marcus Rashford, Joao Cancelo, Hamza Abdel Karim, and Anthony Gordon also vary based on each player's registration duration with the club over the past two seasons and the tournament's duration.
The report confirms that the new compensation system grants clubs financial rewards for their players' participation in both the qualifiers and the final tournament. However, the expansion of the beneficiary base has led to a decrease in the amounts received by major clubs compared to previous editions of the World Cup.
