Romero Pushes for Tottenham Exit, Barcelona His Preferred Destination
Argentinian defender Cristian Romero is continuing his efforts to conclude his time at Tottenham during the summer transfer window, as he has decided to push for a loan move with an option to buy, prioritizing Barcelona should the opportunity to transfer arise, according to Spanish newspaper "Sport."
The newspaper reported that Barcelona held a meeting with Romero's agents to assess his situation, but no further steps were taken due to the abundance of defenders in the squad, while keeping the option open to act if the deal becomes a suitable opportunity in the market.
Sport has added that Romero no longer wishes to continue with Tottenham after last season, due to a strained relationship with the club, despite coach Roberto De Zerbi's insistence on keeping him in his project.
Tottenham is asking for around €50 million for the sale of their Argentine defender, but this amount has prevented any club from making an official offer so far. This situation has led the player to explore a loan option with a future purchase clause.
The report indicates that Inter Milan has already begun studying this scenario, having discussed Cristian Romero's name during talks with Tottenham. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid is keeping an eye on the player's situation, while Barcelona remains the preferred destination for the Argentine international.
Although signing a new defender is not currently a priority for Barcelona, Sport has confirmed that the club may reconsider its position if Tottenham agrees to loan Cristian Romero. This arrangement could facilitate the deal without incurring high transfer costs, especially with the possibility of one of the team's defenders leaving during the current transfer window.
