England achieved a thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, a match filled with numerous historic events and statistics, according to data from Opta.

Opta confirmed that England has reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the 11th time in its history, surpassed only by Brazil (15 times) and Germany (14 times) in terms of reaching this stage in the tournament's history.

The Mexican national team exited the tournament, continuing to hold the record for the most matches played in World Cup history (65 matches) without winning the title.

On an individual level, Harry Kane scored six goals in the 2026 World Cup, becoming the third English player to net six goals in a major tournament after Gary Lineker in 1986 and Kane himself in 2018.

The same source noted that the gap between Jude Bellingham's two goals was only 98 seconds, and 70% of his international goals (7 out of 10) have come in major tournaments.

England recorded the lowest possession percentage in a World Cup match since 1966 at 33.2%, while executing 49 clearances, the highest number in a World Cup match since 1990 against Belgium (54 clearances).

Jarell Quansah became the fourth player in England's history to be sent off in a World Cup, following Ray Wilkins (1986 against Morocco), David Beckham (1998 against Argentina), and Wayne Rooney (2006 against Portugal).

Additionally, Bukayo Saka became the third English player since 1966 to provide three assists in a single World Cup edition, following David Beckham in 2002 and Harry Kane in 2022.

Mexico had previously kept a clean sheet in the first 15 first halves of World Cup matches before Bellingham scored two goals, marking the second-fastest brace by an English player in World Cup history, after Gary Lineker against Poland in 1986.

Julian Quinones scored four goals for Mexico in the 2026 World Cup, matching Luis Hernandez's record from the 1998 edition.

Declan Rice received a yellow card just 56 seconds into the match, the fourth-fastest booking in World Cup history.

Jordan Pickford equaled Peter Shilton's record for the most World Cup appearances for England with 17 matches.
