FIFA Clarifies Controversy Over Hossam Hassan's Palestinian Flag Display
The International Football Association (FIFA) has resolved the controversy surrounding Hossam Hassan, the head coach of the Egyptian national team, who celebrated by raising the Palestinian flag after their historic victory over Australia. FIFA stated that his actions do not breach the regulations of the 2026 World Cup and do not warrant any penalties.
The Egyptian team secured their first-ever qualification to the Round of 16 in World Cup knockout stages after defeating Australia in a penalty shootout (4-2), following a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time.
After the final whistle, Hossam Hassan drew attention as he paraded the Palestinian flag on the pitch, amidst chants of support from fans, a scene that went viral on social media and sparked significant reactions.
The Pharaohs' coach stated in post-match comments: "I dedicate this victory to the Egyptian and Palestinian people; my heart and soul are with them."
In response to inquiries about the possibility of punishing the Egyptian coach, FIFA, in statements reported by the Associated Press, confirmed that flags of all 211 member national federations are permitted during FIFA tournaments, and fans have the right to display them according to stadium regulations and the approved code of conduct.
FIFA added that there are no indications of disciplinary action against Hossam Hassan, especially since the Palestinian Football Association is a recognized member of FIFA, making the display of the Palestinian flag compliant with tournament regulations.
The report noted that FIFA has previously addressed politically themed messages within stadiums according to its regulations, but Hossam Hassan's incident does not fall under cases that would necessitate any penalties.
Thus, FIFA has put an end to speculation regarding the potential punishment of the Egyptian coach, as his celebration after the victory over Australia became one of the standout moments of the 2026 World Cup.
