German FA Pushes Nagelsmann Towards Resignation
Julian Nagelsmann is close to departing from his role as head coach of the German national team after holding a lengthy meeting with officials from the German Football Association to discuss the reasons behind the early exit from the 2026 World Cup, with his future expected to be decided in the coming days.
Sky Sports reported that Nagelsmann participated in a three-and-a-half-hour meeting on Thursday morning with DFB President Bernd Neuendorf, Executive Director Andreas Rettig, Sports Director Rudi Völler, and Bundesliga Association President Hans-Joachim Watzke, where he provided his assessment of the reasons for the failure following the team's exit in the Round of 32 against Paraguay.
The discussions were said to be completely candid, with DFB officials informing Nagelsmann that resignation would be the best option for him to leave his position while preserving his reputation, while the option of dismissal remains on the table should he refuse to step down, although no final decision is expected today.
The same source confirmed that Jürgen Klopp is at the top of the list of candidates to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, as he is currently working as an analyst for World Cup matches, in addition to his role as head of football at the Red Bull Group.
The report noted that Klopp is willing to take charge of the German national team and has a clause in his contract with Red Bull that allows him to terminate his association with the club, a condition he was keen to include before starting his work with the group.
