The former German defender Mats Hummels called for decisive decisions to be made within German football following the German national team's exit from the 2026 World Cup, emphasizing that repeated failures in major tournaments can no longer be considered mere coincidence.

Hummels said in statements to "MagentaTV": "This is not something random or just a coincidence. From the officials' side, what happened indeed calls for actions and consequences. I can't describe it any other way. We hosted the European Championship, the Nations League, and now the World Cup here, and looking back, I still think our performance in the Euros was exaggerated more than it deserved from a sporting perspective, while the other two tournaments were disappointing."

He added: "For this reason, the matter must be taken seriously, both by the national team's coach and the German Football Association. At the very least, there should be genuine discussions about what happened, as there is no other option. Football is a game that relies on results."

Hummels also spoke about the future of some players in the German national team, saying: "I can imagine that some players will decide to retire from international play on their own. It may also be necessary to make decisions regarding some players who are still in their early thirties but have already missed four, five, or six tournaments without delivering a strong campaign or achieving good results for Germany."
