Marcelo Bielsa Announces Resignation from Coaching Uruguay
Argentinian coach Marcelo Bielsa announced his resignation from managing the Uruguay national team during the press conference following their early exit from the 2026 World Cup, expressing his deep sorrow over how his experience with "La Celeste" ended.
Bielsa said: "For me, it's clear that this ending is very painful due to the high hopes I had when I took on this project, and because of the unfortunate way it concluded."
The veteran coach affirmed that he feels a great responsibility towards the players, the technical staff, and everyone involved in the project, adding, "I have pushed many people to make tremendous efforts, especially the players who have shown an exceptional ability to sacrifice and work." He also emphasized that the evaluation of his experience is not about his personal reputation, but about the relationship he has built with his players over the past period.
In his statement, Bielsa categorically denied any disagreements with midfield star Federico Valverde, saying: "I have never had any problems with Valverde at all. I have not made concessions to any player more than I have to Valverde, because he deserves it." He emphasized that the Real Madrid captain has always been an example of commitment and dedication within the national team.
Bielsa also revealed touching details about the goalkeeper Fernando Muslera during the match against Spain, explaining that one day before the match, the goalkeeper suffered from a fever that reached 38.1 degrees, but he recovered on the day of the match and showed no symptoms, being ready to participate. He added, "At halftime, Muslera told me he was extremely upset about the mistake he made to the extent that he preferred not to play, as the team's chances were still alive, and he didn't feel at his best to play the second half."
Bielsa concluded by highly praising the veteran goalkeeper's stance, saying: "I believe this act was extremely generous and selfless, which is rare in modern football."
