Ugarte's Injury Disrupts Manchester United's Transfer Plans

Monday 29-06-2026
Manchester United suffered a significant blow after midfielder Manuel Ugarte sustained a serious knee injury while playing for Uruguay against Spain in the 2026 World Cup, forcing the club to reconsider its summer transfer plans.

According to 'CaughtOffside', quoting 'The Times', Ugarte left the match on a stretcher after suffering a knee sprain, with fears of an anterior cruciate ligament tear, which could sideline him for 9 to 12 months, pending a final diagnosis.

The site added that Manchester United was considering the player's departure this summer, either through a permanent sale or a loan, but the injury made this scenario almost impossible. It also altered the club's plans to restructure the midfield following Casemiro's departure.

Ugarte is expected to undergo rehabilitation at Carrington, while Manchester United will benefit from FIFA's club protection program, which covers part of the player's salary after 28 days of injury, without solving the team's technical crisis.

The same source confirmed that United's management continues to work on strengthening the midfield, having moved to sign Ederson from Atalanta for around £38.8 million, while Matheus Fernandes from West Ham remains of interest, given the need to bolster this position after Ugarte's injury.
