The match between Germany and Paraguay in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup witnessed a controversial refereeing moment when the referee disallowed a goal scored by defender Jonathan Tah during the first extra time, due to a violation related to the new rules concerning corner kicks.

The goal came in the 102nd minute when Tah rose to meet a cross from a corner kick and headed it into the net, but the referee decided to disallow it after consulting the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.

The review showed that defender Waldemar Anton obstructed the Paraguayan goalkeeper during the execution of the corner kick, which was deemed a violation requiring the goal to be disallowed according to the new amendments in the tournament rules.

The regulations applied in the 2026 World Cup stipulate that players are prohibited from blocking or obstructing the goalkeeper during the execution of corner kicks, whether the ball is in play or before it reaches the penalty area. If such blocking results in a goal for the opponent, it is immediately disallowed.

This instance is one of the first cases where this amendment is applied during the tournament, in a move aimed at providing goalkeepers with greater protection and reducing collisions in the penalty area during set pieces.
