Complex Calculations in the World Cup: Algeria and Senegal Under Pressure in the Best Third-Place Race

Friday 26-06-2026
The competition for the best third-place teams in the 2026 World Cup has entered a more complex phase after the results of the last round reshuffled the standings, increasing the pressure on the Algerian and Senegalese teams in the race to qualify for the Round of 32.

The "Foot Mercato" website explained that Ecuador's victory over Germany granted the Ecuadorian team a qualification ticket as one of the best third-place finishers with four points. Additionally, the draw between Australia and Paraguay boosted the latter's chances of advancing, alongside Sweden and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which narrowed the margin of hope for the remaining competing teams.

The report indicated that these results directly impacted the chances of several teams. South Korea's qualification probability decreased by 14%, while Algeria and Senegal's chances dropped by 7%. The Senegalese team appears to be in the toughest position, as they are required to win against Iraq by a comfortable margin in the final round, while also awaiting the results of other groups, since victory alone may not be sufficient to secure qualification.

On the other hand, the Algerian team temporarily holds the seventh position in the ranking of the best third-placed teams, which is the last qualifying spot so far. The same source confirmed that a draw against Austria would largely be sufficient to secure a qualification spot, while a loss could significantly complicate the situation for the team, given the possibility of other teams emerging with four points.

The report added that the match between Algeria and Austria has gained double importance, not only for its sporting value but also because it comes 44 years after the famous match between the two teams in the 1982 World Cup. It also noted that Algeria's chances of finishing the first round among the best third-placed teams have decreased from about 77% to 52%, while the Scottish team, currently in eighth place, is close to exiting the tournament.
