Officially: FIFA Suspends Assem Madibo for 5 Matches After Injuring Ismail Kone

Wednesday 24-06-2026
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced a five-match suspension for Qatar national team player Assim Madibo, following a violent tackle that injured Canada's Ismaël Koné during their group stage match in the 2026 World Cup.

Madibo received a direct red card during the match that ended with Canada's 6-0 victory, after his tackle resulted in Koné suffering a broken left leg, which required surgery and ended his participation in the tournament.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee confirmed that the penalty was imposed due to dangerous violent play, with the possibility of appealing the decision before the FIFA Appeals Committee.

Despite the severity of the incident, Madibo made sure to visit Koné in the hospital accompanied by officials from the Qatar Football Association, in a gesture that was widely praised. The Qatari player showed significant distress from the injury from the moment it occurred.

The five-match suspension is among the harshest disciplinary penalties seen in the 2026 World Cup so far, meaning Madibo will miss several upcoming official matches with the Qatari national team.
