Bosnia and Herzegovina: From Chaos to World Cup Dream Led by Barbarez

Sunday 07-06-2026
The Bosnia and Herzegovina national team returned to the 2026 World Cup after an unexpected journey, marking only their second participation in history, having surpassed the teams of Wales and Italy in the European playoffs.

This achievement came after a difficult period for the team, as they only secured four victories in 19 matches over two qualifying rounds, before coach Sergej Barbarez took over in 2024 and led a comprehensive rebuilding process that restored hope to the fans.

Barbarez, the former national team captain, focused on introducing new blood into the lineup by giving the opportunity to 16 players who made their international debuts in his first year, most of whom are from Bosnian communities in Germany, Sweden, Austria, and the United States.

Despite the criticism he faced after failing to secure any wins in the first eight matches, he remained committed to his project of reviving the fighting spirit and building a strong character for the team, which was later reflected in their historic qualification journey.

The Bosnian national team is not known for a flamboyant style of play, as it relies on strong defense, quick transitions, and direct play, with tactical flexibility between the 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 formations. The new generation is led by several rising talents such as Karim Alibegović, Ismir Bajraktarević, Tarik Muharemović, and Amar Dedić, while the veteran Edin Džeko continues to play the role of leader and the team's most prominent symbol despite being forty years old.

Džeko remains the top star of the national team and the country's all-time leading scorer, having played a decisive role in the playoff matches qualifying for the World Cup.

Followers are also anticipating the brilliance of the young Karim Alibegovic (18 years old), who is regarded as one of the most prominent Bosnian talents since the days of Miralem Pjanic.

In a group that includes Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar, the Bosnian national team hopes to continue writing its exceptional story and achieve a new surprise on the global stage.
