Gilmour's Injury Raises Concerns for Scotland Ahead of World Cup

Saturday 30-05-2026
The Scotland national team received a worrying blow before the start of the 2026 World Cup, after Napoli's midfielder Billy Gilmour sustained an injury during the friendly match against Curaçao.

The 'Football Italia' website reported that Gilmour was forced to leave the field before the end of the first half of Scotland's 4-1 victory, following a knee injury that required medical intervention.

Although the injury did not initially appear serious, Scotland's coach Steve Clarke expressed his concern about the player's condition in his post-match statements.

Clarke said: 'We are waiting to know the severity of the injury. He underwent medical examinations, and we will wait for the doctors' report. There is no point in speculating at the moment, and I hope he will be with us on the next journey.'

Concerns within the Scottish team are increasing as the 2026 World Cup approaches, with Gilmour hoping to participate in the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, especially as he will turn 25 next month.

This development comes after a season in which the player suffered from several injuries, having participated in only 20 matches with Napoli and scored one goal. He also missed a long period from November to February after undergoing surgery to treat a recurring pelvic issue.

Gilmour joined Napoli from Brighton in 2024 and succeeded during his time with the Italian club in winning the Serie A title and the Italian Super Cup.
