Barcelona Loses Chance to Sign Marcos Senesi as He Nears Tottenham Move

Barcelona receives a new setback in bolstering its defense line, as Argentine Marcos Senesi, Bournemouth's defender, is nearing a move to Tottenham during the upcoming transfer window in a free transfer deal.

The Spanish newspaper "Sport" explained that Barcelona continues to search for a central defender to support the team within the new sports project, while the sports administration is working on studying several names to strengthen the backline before the start of the next season.

The Catalan club recently ruled out the idea of signing Italian Alessandro Bastoni due to high financial demands from Inter Milan, leading Senesi to also be out of Barcelona's plans as he nears the English Premier League again through Tottenham's gate.

The report indicated that Senesi's name was proposed to Barcelona recently, and signing him was seriously considered, especially after the strong performances he delivered with Bournemouth this season, in addition to his ability to play with his left foot, which attracted the interest of several European clubs.

Barcelona received all the information about the Argentine defender last January, especially since his agency is the same one representing German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, while the club closely followed the player as a suitable option both technically and financially.

Nevertheless, Barcelona decided not to move officially to finalize the deal, prompting the player and his entourage not to wait for the Spanish club any longer, before reaching an agreement with Tottenham, as confirmed by "Sky Sports" network.

The report added that the agreement between Senesi and Tottenham was reached weeks ago, but the final announcement was delayed until the London team was officially ensured to stay, which was achieved during the last round of the season.

The Argentine defender is expected to sign a four-year contract with Tottenham, to continue competing in the Premier League in the coming years.

Senesi's arrival may open the door for the departure of one of Tottenham's current defenders, while Barcelona continues to monitor the situation of Argentine Cristian Romero, along with its interest in Dutchman Micky van de Ven.

Signing a true striker remains a top priority within Barcelona during the upcoming transfer market, after which the possibility of moving to sign a new defender will be determined based on the club's financial capability.
