Romero Returns to London Ahead of Tottenham's Survival Battle Against Everton

The Argentine defender Cristian Romero returned to London at a very critical time, just a few hours before the decisive match that Tottenham faces against Everton in the final round of the English Premier League, amid tense atmospheres and increasing pressure surrounding the London team.

Tottenham faces the match under a real threat of relegation to the Championship, as a loss to Everton could give West Ham a chance to survive if they outperform Leeds United in the final round.

Romero had sparked anger among the "Spurs" fans in recent days after he was seen in Argentina, amid reports suggesting he might attend the final of his childhood team Belgrano, instead of staying with his team at this critical time.

However, the international defender returned to the United Kingdom before the anticipated match, as he was spotted in the British capital, London, making his presence against Everton highly expected.

For his part, coach Roberto De Zerbi addressed the controversy surrounding the team captain, affirming during the press conference that the way leaders handle situations varies from player to player.

De Zerbi said, "Not all leaders are the same. Ben Davies asked to stay and work with us today, and we will spend the night at the hotel in preparation for the match."

He added: "Davies wanted to be with the team and his teammates, while Romero is preparing for the World Cup and is simultaneously dealing with an injury. For me, nothing has changed, and the most important thing now is to think about what serves Tottenham's future."

The Italian coach clarified that Romero's trip to Argentina was fully coordinated with the medical staff, stating: "He spoke with the medical team, and it was agreed to continue his treatment program there in collaboration with the Argentine medical team."

De Zerbi also emphasized his confidence in the player's commitment, saying: "We talked last week, and he has always shown his desire to stay with us. I want to be clear, if I feel that a player is thinking of himself before the club, I will take a different stance."

He continued: "I have nothing negative to say about Romero. From day one, he has been professional and straightforward with me."

When asked about the anger of Tottenham fans, the coach expressed his full understanding of their feelings, adding: "I understand the fans' reaction 100%. I may not know all the details, but what I have seen from Christian has always been positive, and with me, he was a great person."

Romero has had a notable career with Tottenham since joining from Atalanta, initially playing on loan before the deal was later made permanent.

The Argentine defender played 156 matches in the London club's jersey, scoring 13 goals. However, his career also faced repeated criticism due to his disciplinary record, having been sent off six times since joining the team.
