Switzerland secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup by defeating Colombia 4-3 on penalties, following a goalless draw after regular and extra time in their Round of 16 clash.

The match was fiercely contested, with both teams unable to break the deadlock over 120 minutes despite several attempts to score, leading to a penalty shootout to determine who would advance.

In the shootout, Switzerland triumphed 4-3, converting four of their penalties while Colombia missed two out of five attempts.

Davinson Sánchez missed Colombia's second penalty, and Cuadrado Hernández failed to convert the fourth, while Manuel Akanji missed Switzerland's third penalty, ultimately allowing Switzerland to secure their advancement.

With this victory, Switzerland continues their journey in the 2026 World Cup, setting up a quarterfinal showdown against Argentina.

Argentina reached the last eight after a dramatic 3-2 win over Egypt, making the upcoming clash between Switzerland and Argentina one of the tournament's highlights.
