Tuchel Defends His Decision to Include Toney for the World Cup

Friday 22-05-2026
German coach Thomas Tuchel defended his decision regarding the England national team's squad for the 2026 World Cup, after deciding to give striker Ivan Toney a chance.

Tuchel explained that the Saudi Al-Ahli striker is delivering impressive numbers this season, having scored 32 goals in 32 matches, in addition to having a conversion rate and offensive stats that have surpassed even Bayern Munich's striker Harry Kane.

Tuchel confirmed that the selection of Toney was not strange to him, especially since the England team included only three outright strikers: Kane, Toney, and Ollie Watkins, considering that this number is not large compared to previous tournaments that saw four or five strikers on the roster.

On the other hand, critics of the decision pointed out that England needed to retain one of the players with creative skills like Foden or Palmer instead of adding a new striker.

Tuchel said about Toni: "He is still achieving the numbers, and he has very special skills that can help us, especially in scenarios where we need to score a goal."

He added: "He can be an important addition alongside Harry Kane, as he excels at being present in the penalty area and draws the attention of defenders away from other attackers. He is also a natural striker and very strong in set-pieces and using his body."

The German coach also emphasized that Toni is "one of the best penalty takers in the world," asserting that he possesses the qualities the team needed.
