The mayor of the city of Vigo announced that Celta Vigo star Iago Aspas has officially agreed to have a statue erected in his honor around the Balaídos Stadium. This is part of a tribute project aimed at commemorating the career of one of the club and city's most prominent figures.

The Spanish news agency (EFE) reported that the mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, confirmed that the municipality is continuing to work on a project to honor Aspas, noting that the player has given his "approval" to have a statue of him placed outside the stadium.

The mayor explained that during the upcoming municipal council meeting on Monday, he will present the official approval details for the player, paving the way for the next phase of the project, which includes launching an "ideas competition" to select the final design for the statue.

Caballero added that the statue's location will be at the intersection of the "Tribuna" and "Marca D'or" stands, in the area known as "Balaídos," which gives the symbolic work a prominent position within the stadium's surroundings.

The city mayor confirmed that the necessary funding for the project's implementation is now available, emphasizing that this honor reflects the great value Aspas represents, being the historic top scorer for Celta and one of the most prominent athletes in Vigo's history.

He concluded by noting that Iago Aspas holds a special place among the club's fans, thanks to his long career with the team and his sense of loyalty and dedication, which makes him a football and human symbol within the city.
