Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya Rejects Al-Shorta's Gift and Stumbles Against Nawroz
Monday 27-04-2026
Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya rejected the gift offered by its rival Al-Shorta by drawing against Naft Maysan, and in turn fell into the trap of a 1-1 draw against its host Nawroz, in the match that brought the two teams together this Monday afternoon at Nawroz Stadium, as part of the conclusion of the 31st round of the Iraqi Stars League.

The match began with expected pressure from Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, seeking to exploit Al-Shorta's stumble and expand the lead at the top to 8 points. However, Nawroz, which is having an impressive season at home, had a different opinion.

In the 17th minute, the home team surprised the "Falcons" with a goal lead by player Ognjen Mersic, taking advantage of Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya's defensive confusion to put his team ahead and ignite the stands.

Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya tried to return quickly, but Nawroz's organized defense and the brilliance of its goalkeeper prevented the score from being evened. The first half ended with Nawroz leading 1-0 amid the shock of the leaders' players and fans.

With the start of the second half, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya's coach threw all his offensive cards in search of a comeback. The continuous pressure resulted in an equalizing goal in the 68th minute by Muhannad Abu Taha, bringing the match back to square one and giving the "Falcons" hope for victory in the remaining minutes.

Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya intensified its attacks after the draw and wasted several clear chances that could have secured the three points. On the other hand, Nawroz relied on counter-attacks and almost snatched a winning goal on more than one occasion if not for Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya's alert defense.

The final minutes witnessed great excitement and attempts from both sides, but the final whistle announced a 1-1 draw, costing Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya two valuable points in the title race.

With this draw, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya raised its tally to 71 points in first place, but failed to capitalize on Al-Shorta's 2-2 draw against Naft Maysan last Sunday. The gap remained 7 points instead of widening to 9 points, giving "Al-Qithara" a glimmer of new hope with 7 rounds remaining in the league.

Meanwhile, Nawroz continued its strong performances at home, raising its tally to 44 points in ninth place, confirming it is one of the best mid-table teams this season and capable of challenging the big teams. A point from the leaders is considered a big gain for Nawroz's team, especially after the combative performance they delivered.
