Yellow Cards Threaten Barcelona Before Champions League Clash with Atletico
Tuesday 07-04-2026
Barcelona is preparing for a tough match against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, amid growing concerns within the team about the risk of suspension due to yellow cards.

The Catalan team enters the match amidst significant absences, as coach Hans Flick will be without the services of Raphinha, Marc Bernal, Frenkie de Jong, and Andreas Christensen due to injuries, which complicates the match's dynamics.

According to "Mundo Deportivo," the coaching staff is considering the possibility of securing qualification in the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium, which makes them cautious in handling players who are at risk of suspension during the first leg.

Lamine Yamal, Fermín López, Gerard Martin, and Marc Casado are at the top of the list of players at risk of missing the return match if they receive a yellow card in the Camp Nou game, which could deprive the team of their services in the crucial encounter.

The trio is expected to start in the main lineup, while Casado also has a chance to participate, especially given the current absences in the midfield.

In the same context, several other Barcelona players face the risk of entering the list of those threatened, as Pau Cubarsi, Jules Koundé, Alejandro Balde, João Cancelo, and Dani Olmo have each received one card, meaning they will be at risk of suspension if they receive another warning.

The tournament regulations stipulate that yellow cards are canceled starting from the semifinals to ensure that no player misses the final match due to an accumulation of warnings.

On the other hand, Atletico Madrid's situation seems more complicated, as coach Diego Simeone faces the risk of losing a large number of his players. Eight players are threatened with suspension: Marcos Llorente, Robin Le Normand, Clément Lenglet, Matteo Ruggeri, Marc Pubill, Giuliano Simeone, and Thiago Almada, along with the injured Pablo Barrios, making the calculations for the match more difficult before the return leg.
