Rabah Madjer: I Deserved Three Ballon d'Or Awards and Was Treated Unfairly
The Algerian football legend Rabah Madjer spoke about his football career, asserting that he was subjected to significant injustice after being denied the Ballon d'Or award on multiple occasions.
Majer said he believes he deserved to win the award three times, in the years 1987, 1988, and 1990, considering the achievements he made during that period.
The Algerian star explained that in 1987 he won the European Champions League title with Porto, but the award went to the Dutchman Ruud Gullit at that time.
He added that in 1988 he won the Club World Cup in Japan with Porto, yet he did not win the Ballon d'Or, noting that at that time he was the only Arab and African player to achieve this feat.
Majer continued his speech by saying that in 1990, he was crowned with the Algerian national football team as the champion of the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations held in Algeria. He also received the award for the best player in the tournament, but he did not win the Ballon d'Or, which he found puzzling.
In another context, Madjer spoke about his coaching experience, explaining that he doesn't like to talk much about his country, but he wonders why he succeeds when he works as a coach outside Algeria.
He pointed out that he worked as a coach for Porto's reserve team and achieved good results, explaining that the club's management wanted him to continue. Additionally, the then-coach Tomislav Ilic requested him to stay on the first team's technical staff as an assistant coach.
He added that he declined this offer at the time after receiving a call to coach the Algerian national team, preferring to return to serve his country.
He also mentioned his experience with Al-Wakrah Club in Qatar, confirming that he won four titles with the team and achieved good results.
Majer concluded his remarks by pointing out the difficulties he faced while working as a coach in Algeria, citing what happened in 2003 when he led the national team in a friendly match against the Belgium national football team in Brussels. The match ended in a goalless draw, after which he was dismissed from his position without clear reasons.
