Monday 23-02-2026
The curtain has officially fallen on the controversy surrounding the contentious incident involving Uruguayan Federico Valverde during the match against Benfica in the first leg of the playoff qualifying for the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

According to the Spanish newspaper "AS," the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has decided to reject Benfica's complaint and not impose any penalty on the Real Madrid player.

The incident occurred in the 82nd minute, with the score indicating Real Madrid's lead by one goal to nil, in a tense atmosphere following the crisis of racial insults related to Bristani and the match being halted for several minutes.

During a side altercation with player Dal, Valverde threw a punch with his hand at the face of a Benfica player, in an incident some considered violent behavior, even though the replay showed no direct contact or clear injury.

Referee François Letexier did not issue any card at the time, nor did the video assistant referee intervene, which allowed the incident to pass without penalty on the field. Later, Benfica club took administrative action and filed an official complaint, demanding an investigation and retrospective punishment for the player.

UEFA rejected Benfica's complaint, adhering to the principle that what is decided on the field is not reconsidered in UEFA's offices, as long as the refereeing team has reviewed the incident and did not make a disciplinary decision regarding it.
