Simeone: We Needed the Win, and We Want More from Lookman
Sunday 22-02-2026
Diego Simeone, the coach of Atletico Madrid, spoke after his team's 4-2 victory over Espanyol in the Spanish League, emphasizing the importance of the win in the competition race.

Simeone said: "We needed to collect points in the league to get closer to the teams ahead of us. The team read the match well, we conceded an early goal, and we couldn't resolve that situation. I think we could have done more defensively."

He continued: "From that point, the team became the dominant side. At all times, we sought to control the match, and I believe we delivered a very comprehensive game over the 90 minutes."

He added: "I was telling Sorloth before the match that he had three chances to score in 20 minutes in Bruges. We need this player when he's at his best because he makes a difference."

He added: "Lookman primarily adds goals, more goals than play. He can improve in play and defensive work. We need him in this aspect and to adapt to what the team is working on. His message is that he wants to improve as a football player. He has that goal-scoring instinct, and it's no coincidence those goals he has already scored. We need more from him in play as well."

Simeone concluded his statements by saying: "The messages should be internal, giving energy to our fans, stemming from our vitality and style of play. I have no doubt that the stadium will support us against Bruges."
