Guardiola: Racism Exists Everywhere, I Haven't Discussed It with the Players
Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola appeared at a press conference to discuss tomorrow's match against Newcastle United in the 27th round of the English Premier League.
The coach commented on the team's benefit from the week off and Arsenal's draw against Wolverhampton: "We have long months ahead without midweek breaks. We will play every weekend and most midweeks."
He added, "I don't run a single meter, so for me, there's no problem. After a day or two, I sleep well, and that's enough. For the players, it's very important. They have a week or two to rest—this week and the next—to forget what happened and train well. They have trained well in the past two days."
Regarding the experience of his players compared to Arsenal in the title race: "70% of the players are new, so they don't have the experience to handle such situations. Experience is winning tomorrow. That's the only experience."
Regarding his conversation with the team after Arsenal's setback against Wolverhampton: "I didn't talk about that for even a second. Just Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle. I didn't talk about the standings or our position or anything like that. I don't care at all. There are still 12 games left. If you ask me this question two or three games before the end, I'll give you the answer. There are 12 games left, and that's a very long time."
He added: "There are 12 matches remaining in the league, which is a large number, as I said before. Therefore, the match against Newcastle is my only concern. We will think about the League Cup final against Arsenal when the time comes, but for now, the focus is on Newcastle, then a break, and after that Leeds. It has always been like this. I understand that as journalists you want to anticipate what will happen. That doesn't count. Only Newcastle, that's all. I don't know what will happen in the remaining matches."
He continued regarding the alleged racist incidents against Vinicius Junior in the Benfica vs. Real Madrid match: "I said last week, it's not because of where you were born or the color of your skin that you become better or worse. There is still a lot of work to be done. The problem is in society, not just in football. Racism exists everywhere. Do you think racism is only about skin color? The way you behave can be racist. It's about how you claim to be better than others for many reasons."
He concluded: "What is the solution to racism, in your opinion? Schools. Teachers should be paid high salaries. This is how the problem is solved. In schools, not in football. Teachers and doctors should be the best and most important in society, by a wide margin. Not coaches."
