Simeone: We Knew We Wouldn't Have a Comfortable Night, and We Missed Defensive Solidity
Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, spoke after the match, confirming that his team expected a tough encounter against Club Brugge in the Champions League.
Simeone said: "The match was as we expected, perhaps the most intense opponent in the Champions League, a very young team, and we knew it wouldn't be an easy match."
He added: "We had a dominant first half, scored two goals and were close to adding more through counter-attacks, but after their quick goal made it 2-1, they got back into the game, and we didn't attack as we did in the first half."
He continued: "They equalized 2-2, we took the lead again, then the last goal came as a result of our misjudgment in defense, and the third goal was one we could have handled better defensively."
He pointed out the nature of the match, saying: "The match extends for 90 minutes, not just 45, and everything is connected to what happens during it. We reacted well to their two goals when it became 3-2, and I leave with the feeling that the team competed very well against an opponent that is not easy to face here."
Regarding the result, he said: "In the first half, we saw it as good, but the context of the match says that the draw was fair, both teams had chances to score, and there is a return match at our home, and we hope to deliver a great match."
Regarding the importance of the fans in the return match, he said: "We don't need them just on Tuesday, but also on Saturday, we have to give our best so they come, we need that energy because we play every three days, and the most important thing is to win."
He concluded his statements by saying: "The Champions League requires both defensive and offensive strength, and we missed defensive solidity."
