Flick: The First Half Was a Big Lesson for Us, Proud of the Team Despite the Defeat
Hans Flick, the coach of Barcelona, provided his assessment of the first leg of the Spanish King's Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid, which ended with Atletico winning 4-0 at the Metropolitano Stadium, emphasizing the lessons learned despite the loss.
Flick said: "We didn't play well in the first half, we didn't play as a team, the distances between the players were too large, and we didn't press correctly. In the first 45 minutes, we learned a big lesson. The end was better, we have two more halves and we will fight. If we win 2-0 in each half, we will need the support of our fans at Camp Nou."
He added: "I'm not disappointed with the team, I'm happy with the team's season. We faced many injuries, losses are part of the game. It was a painful defeat, but I'm proud of the team. We must learn the lesson; they had a greater hunger to score, and that's what I want. We didn't do that in the first half. The team is young, but I'm not making excuses."
Regarding the video technology, Flick said: "What can I say? We started with yellow cards, and the first challenge on Balde deserved a card. If it had been applied, everything would have been different. By not doing so, playing in this way is encouraged. For me, it's confusing. Did they stop for seven minutes? Did they find something? For me, it wasn't offside. If they saw something, they should say so, but there is no communication."
He continued: "The worst day was against Inter. Now we have a chance to come back. It won't be easy, but we will try."
He added about the player changes: "We had to make the change, Casado had a card, and there were many one-on-one confrontations."
