Guardiola: We Don't Spend Enough, and This is Rayan Cherki's Situation
Tuesday 03-02-2026
Manchester City is preparing to host Newcastle United tomorrow evening, Wednesday, at the Etihad Stadium, in the second leg of the English League Cup semi-final for the 2025/2026 season.

City enters the match with a clear advantage after putting one foot in the final, following their 2-0 away win in the first leg, with goals from Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki.

During the pre-match press conference, Spanish coach Pep Guardiola spoke about the spending policy, saying: 'I am sad because Manchester City ranks seventh in the list of the most spending clubs in the Premier League over the last five years. I don't understand why the owners don't spend more money. I am a bit upset with them because we are competing with six teams that spend more than us.'

Regarding Rayan Cherki's condition and the possibility of his participation against Newcastle, he said: 'Rayan is suffering from an injury, and we don't know the details yet. The medical team will assess his condition later, and we will make a decision based on that.'

The City coach also discussed the loan of midfielder Kalvin Phillips to Sheffield United, explaining: 'He has trained with us in recent days after recovering from injury, but he needs time to regain his form, and he needs to play continuously, so we preferred to loan him out to give him a greater chance to participate.'

He confirmed that his team has a new opportunity to reach the final, saying: 'We have a chance to play our fifth final in the last ten years of this tournament.'

The City coach pointed out the importance of reaching the decisive stages, explaining: 'Reaching the final stages is extremely important, especially for the new players, not only on an individual level but for the club as a whole.'

He addressed the team's performance during matches, saying: 'In the second half, we sometimes fall back from what we were in the first half, perhaps because the team has become younger compared to what it was ten years ago. We have to accept that and work on development instead of trying to replicate the same performance.'
