Guardiola: I Know the Reason for Our Current Struggles, and This is My Stance
Friday 23-01-2026
Manchester City's head coach, Spaniard Pep Guardiola, spoke at the press conference ahead of the Premier League match against Wolverhampton, which will take place tomorrow, Saturday, in the 23rd round.

The coach said about the newcomer Marc Guehi: "Marc is a national team player and was a captain last season. I have a feeling he will help us, yes, but fragility is not about just one player. I know the solution, and it is not about one player."

He added in his speech: "We cannot lose matches. Manchester City is such a perfect club that we cannot afford to lose. This is the reality. We have to change the dynamics and try to win matches, starting with tomorrow's match and then Wednesday's match."

Regarding Rodri's decline in performance: "I know the reason for our struggles right now, and I know it 100%. It's been ongoing for 11 months. Rodri just needs more time; our standards are very high. That's why I fully understand the reason for our occasional instability. I'm completely confident in his return, yes, but that depends on the team as a whole, not just on him alone."

Regarding Haaland's apology to the fans after the loss against Bodo/Glimt: "Haaland should not apologize. He just needs to give his best, and he is trying to do that. When the team doesn't win, it's not about just one player, and there's no need to apologize. We have a distinguished group of leaders within the team, one of the best groups I've worked with since I joined the club, due to their connection with the club and the team through details and values."

He continued: "We won against Newcastle a week ago with a score of 2-0. Against Bodo/Glimt, we missed many chances and weren't aggressive enough with long balls, conceding two goals in two minutes. In that match, I didn't feel the issue was fatigue, but rather the details within the game. Why are we returning to this topic again? Nothing will change. In the Bodo match, we had 11 players absent. Aston Villa and Tottenham also have absences. This isn't exclusive to us; Haaland has great physical strength that allows him to keep playing matches."

He emphasized, "I have an exceptional team and exceptional players. We are a great football team, and I have no doubt about that at all. I fully understand why the team has been unstable over the past month, but I will not share it with you."

Regarding Arsenal: "Arsenal is currently the best team in the world. Look at the Champions League, the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the League Cup. I hope we can be close to them, and we hope they give us just one chance to catch up with them."

Regarding the Manchester City players refunding the ticket costs for fans who traveled to Norway to watch the Bodo/Glimt match, he said: "The current leadership group, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, and Rodri, is the best I've seen since I joined the club in 2016."

He concluded: "Marc Guehi will participate tomorrow, it's good to have him with us, a very good deal, especially since he is a center-back. A great deal. Nunez is suffering from a virus, and we will see what the doctors say. Nico Gonzalez? I don't think he will be ready."
