Moroccan Police Detain 18 Senegalese and Algerian Fans
Moroccan security authorities have detained 18 Senegalese fans and one Algerian fan on suspicion of involvement in riots during the Africa Cup of Nations final between the Moroccan and Senegalese teams at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Judicial sources told Agence France-Presse that the Senegalese fans were placed in police custody under the instructions of the public prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Rabat, to be questioned about the incidents that occurred inside the stadium. The detained Algerian fan is also suspected of inciting the riot.
The incident occurred just minutes before the end of the regular time of the match, which ended with Senegal winning 1-0 against Morocco, when a number of Senegalese fans attempted to storm the pitch for about 15 minutes before security forces and event organizers managed to regain control of the situation with difficulty.
