Guardiola: This is the condition of the injured players, and we are not thinking about the title
Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola appeared at a press conference to talk about tomorrow's match against Brighton, in the 21st round of the English Premier League.
He was asked if this season is similar to last season in terms of injuries, and he said: "No, the spirit is different."
Regarding the title race, Guardiola said: "We are thinking about the Brighton match."
He continued about the club's position in the transfer market: "Maybe we will get something, but the situation is completely different [from last season]. We will not buy four or five players as we did last season, to have the best net spending in transfers in the country. We are not like that, but it seems we always are."
About Arsenal's strength, the Premier League leader: "Very strong. Very strong. In the last two or three seasons, they have been very strong and are getting stronger year after year. They are like that."
About the team's condition: "We have six or seven injured players. If you have 35 players in the team, that is not financially sustainable. We must keep our financial figures balanced, but I was very happy with the team we had during the preparation period and the current season. Things are as they are. Sometimes this happens over the years; Guardiola and Dias will be out for a long time, Stones will return soon, and the players returning from the Africa Cup of Nations. We will get through this phase and move on to the next stage. I am very confident and positive that we will succeed."
He added: "John Stones, of course, is a very important player for us. Last season he was injured for a long time, and it seems this season is similar. He tries as much as possible to do everything but is not physically ready."
About the pressure of work in England compared to Germany and Spain: "The situation is very similar. I don't think there is another country where you are safe if you do not win matches. If you don't get results, the past or present doesn't matter. Every coach is hired for their ideas and fired for their results. Sometimes you need time and a process. The gaps are very small sometimes, and when important players are absent, it is always difficult. But the reason? Honestly, I don't know."
He continued about the dismissal of Amorim: "Yes, that is reality. Less time. I cannot say anything out of respect for the players and institutions at Chelsea and Manchester United. All I can say is that Ruben is an excellent coach. The decision was made by our neighbors but I wish him all the best."
Regarding the duration of the injured players' absence, he concluded: "Ruben Dias is suffering from a hamstring injury, 4 to 6 weeks, John Stones is not ready for upcoming matches, Nathan Aké is fine, Josko Gvardiol will be out for a long time, Nico Gonzalez is fine, I admire him, but I don't know. I would like to know how many minutes he can play, but we will talk with the player and see."
