Espanyol Under Scrutiny After Bottle-Throwing Incident in Catalonia Derby
Monday 05-01-2026
The Spanish newspaper 'AS' confirmed that Espanyol club may face disciplinary measures from the Disciplinary Committee following the incident where several bottles were thrown onto the pitch at the Cornella stadium during the recent derby against Barcelona, which ended with a 2-0 victory for Barcelona, despite the match generally proceeding without major incidents.

Referee Garcia Verdura noted in his official report that in the 90th minute of the match, coinciding with Lewandowski's second goal, several half-full and sealed bottles were thrown from the stands located in the right corner near the players' tunnel, where Espanyol fans were present and identified by their shirts and scarves. The referee confirmed that the bottles did not hit any player nor cause any damage.

According to protocol, the stadium loudspeakers announced a halt to any object throwing, and the match continued without interruption or problems, ending normally. Espanyol club stated that it does not expect a severe penalty, as it cooperated with La Liga and took all necessary security measures, including urging fans to remain calm before and during the game.

The newspaper added that the final decision will be made by the Disciplinary Committee based on the referee's report, noting that the Cornella stadium remains under threat of closure since September 2024 after a similar incident against Villarreal when a plastic cup hit the referee in the chest. However, the punishment this time may be limited to a financial fine, especially since no one was hit by the bottles.
