Flick: Ready for the Catalonia Derby, This Is Yamal and Olmo's Status
Friday 02-01-2026
German coach Hans Flick, the manager of FC Barcelona, spoke about his team's preparation for the upcoming Catalonia derby against Espanyol during the pre-match press conference, emphasizing his players' readiness and the importance of staying calm and focused.

At the start of his speech, Flick said: "First of all, happy holidays to everyone. It will be an exciting match, and I would like to congratulate Manolo González on the great work he is doing. Espanyol has achieved five consecutive wins, they press very well, especially during transitions, and we need to be careful and play at our best level—that's the most important thing."

Regarding the atmosphere of the match and Juan Garcia, he continued: "Last season wasn't easy either. This season, they have a lot of confidence and apply good pressure. We need to play calmly and show our best football. I believe we have enough quality to win there."

Regarding Juan Garcia's current form, he added: "I don't see any difference compared to previous weeks. It will be an important match, and he has confidence and believes in his abilities and quality, which is what he wants to demonstrate."

Regarding the readiness of Lamin Yamal and Dani Olmo, he continued: "Yes, they are ready. Dani played the small-sided match today, he is not afraid of one-on-one challenges, and he has taken an important step. Lamin has also returned."

He added, "The most important thing in football is supporting your team, not attacking the opposing team. This is what’s best for your team. Everyone should send positive energy and focus only on their own team."

Regarding the winter transfer market, he continued: "It's a difficult question; we are not ready yet. When you look at the backline, from the center-backs to the full-backs, we need an additional player, but we have to discuss it. It's hard to bring in a standout player during the winter window. I trust that we might do something, but it has to make sense."

Regarding Ronald Araújo's return, he added: "It depends on him. He is not yet fully physically ready, but he is in good condition. He has to decide how quickly to come back. For me, it’s clear—I see and feel that the team’s support for him is excellent. He has taken the time he needed, and he is on the right track."

Regarding his wishes for 2026, Flick said: "For me, the most important thing is training, as we have done in the last two weeks, with high quality, intensity, and great focus. That's how you can improve. There is great potential in the team. I hope all the players stay healthy. We've had many injuries, and that's enough for this season."

Regarding the possibility of Eric playing in midfield, he continued: "We will see tomorrow. He is in great shape. With Koulibaly and Gerard, this triangle gives us stability, as do Kondé and Baldi."

Regarding his happiness working at Barcelona, he continued: "I have learned a lot during this year and a half. I love Barcelona's mentality, I love living here. I have a great technical staff, the players are amazing, and all the staff help us a lot—the communications team, the management, Deco. We want to give our best for the fans. I feel that every day. I truly appreciate what this club has, and I will give my best for it."

Flick concluded his remarks about Juan Garcia by saying: "As I see him, he is always focused, has had an excellent half-season, and has proven that his decision was the right one. He is at a very high level, he is our first-choice goalkeeper, and I have no concerns about him."
