Emery Justifies the 'Handshake' Incident After Aston Villa's Four-Goal Defeat to Arsenal
Friday 02-01-2026
Spanish coach Unai Emery, the manager of Aston Villa, attributed his leaving the pitch without shaking hands with his compatriot Mikel Arteta, Arsenal's coach, to the latter's delay in approaching him during their Premier League match.

He told Sky Sports after the match: "I was waiting for Arteta, but he was celebrating with his coaching staff, and my usual rule is to shake the opposing coach's hand first. If the other party does not comply, I cannot stay long, especially since the atmosphere was very cold."

On the field, Arsenal succeeded in delivering one of their best offensive performances, managing to break through the 'Villans' defense and score four deserved goals, in a match that witnessed a clear tactical superiority by Mikel Arteta's squad, which firmly controlled the course of the game, ending the match with a comprehensive 4-1 victory for the Gunners.

With this result, Arsenal strengthened their position at the top of the English Premier League table with 45 points, five points ahead of Manchester City, who will play Sunderland tomorrow.
